The Hemingway themed room designed by Barbara Pettinella of Decorating Dens Interiors and recently featured on Houzz.comstarted out with a completely different style until her client saw The Palisade by Fanimation.

“We had to modify our original plan from a Colorado lodge theme to Hemingway,” Pettinella said. “Once he [the client] saw this fan and the monkey, he wanted it.” The Palisade with the monkey ended up being Pettinella’s favorite part of deocrating this room.

This room features a stone fireplace which was the original inspiration for the Colorado Lodge theme; however, the simple, clean lines of the windows on either side of the fireplace made it easy to modify the original plan, said Pettinella. After the client was hooked on the ceiling fan and the monkey, he wanted to switch to a tropical themed room with parrots on the lamps, but his wife wasn’t sold on the idea. At this point, the Hemingway style was born.

More about the Designer:

Barbara Pettinella and her husband Steven work together for Decorating Dens Interiors, a franchise, which was established in 1969. Barbara has over 30 years of interior design experience.

After high school, Pettinella went to Ladycliff College of Highland Falls, New York and studied Art and Fashion Merchandising before she settled into the Interior Design program.

Pettinella grew up with an interest in textures and colors and says she just has an “eye” for it. When working with clients she likes to determine the style the client wants, and then she likes pushing the boundaries.

“It’s not a job,” she said. “I love doing this. You wake up excited about your project.”

Steven is an important part of the team, and Barbara referred to him as “The Color Guy”. “Some of our clients won’t even buy towels without talking to Steven first,” Pettinella said.
